Migrant Visa - Worker (M-Worker)

Long-term visa for foreigners with a fixed-term or indefinite employment contract with a Colombian company or entity.

• Valid up to 3 years, multiple entry.
• Automatically loses validity if holder remains outside Colombia for more than 6 consecutive months.
• After 2-5 years on M visa (depending on subcategory), holder may qualify for R (Resident) visa.

Visitor Visa - Technical Assistance (V-Technical)

Short-term visa for foreigners providing professional technical assistance or specialized services to Colombian entities.

For temporary technical work. For long-term professional work, the M-Worker or M-Expertise visa applies.

Migrant Visa - Expertise/Professional (M-Expertise)

Visa for foreigners practicing an independent profession or providing specialized expertise services in Colombia on a long-term basis.

• Valid up to 3 years.
• Requires demonstration of professional expertise.
• Loses validity if absent from Colombia more than 6 consecutive months.

Visitor Visa - Student (V-Student)

Visa for foreigners enrolled in an educational institution in Colombia, including academic programs and language training.

• Valid up to 2 years or for the duration of the academic program.
• Must maintain enrollment at a Colombian institution.
• Electronic visa with no passport stamp.

Visitor Visa - Digital Nomad (V-Nómada Digital)

Visa for foreigners who work remotely for foreign companies or clients, or who develop digital content or IT ventures of interest to Colombia, while living in Colombia.

• Created under Resolución 5477 de 2022.
• For visa-exempt nationalities, no visa is needed for digital nomad activities under 90 days.
• Requires minimum monthly income of 3× Colombia's SMMLV (~USD 1,400/month at 2026 rates).
• Must have health insurance covering Colombia.
• Income requirement indexed annually to SMMLV.
• Cannot earn income from Colombian sources.

Migrant Visa - Retirement/Pensioner (M-Pensionado)

Visa for foreigners receiving a stable pension or retirement income from a foreign source who wish to reside in Colombia.

• Minimum pension income requirement: 3× Colombia's SMMLV (~COP 5,252,715/month, ~USD 1,400/month at 2026 rates).
• Pension must be periodic and from a foreign source.
• After 5 continuous years, holder may apply for R (Resident) visa.
• Considered one of the more accessible retirement visas in Latin America.
• FBI background check may be required for US citizens.

Migrant Visa - Real Estate Investment (M-Real Estate)

Visa for foreigners making direct foreign investment in Colombian real estate.

• Minimum investment: 350× SMMLV (~COP 612,816,750 / ~USD 161,300 at 2026 rates).
• After 3 continuous years on M visa, may qualify for R (Resident) visa.
• Automatically loses validity if holder remains outside Colombia more than 6 consecutive months.

Migrant Visa - Business/Company Investment (M-Business)

Visa for foreigners investing in or owning a share of a Colombian commercial company.

• Minimum investment: 100× SMMLV in the company.
• For large-scale direct foreign investment, minimum is 650× SMMLV.
• After 3 continuous years on M visa, may qualify for R (Resident) visa.

Resident Visa - Direct Foreign Investment (R-Investor)

Permanent residency visa granted directly to foreigners making a substantial direct foreign investment in Colombia.

• Part of R (Resident) category under Resolución 5477 de 2022.
• Minimum investment: USD 100,000 (or equivalent in COP) in one's own name per the International Investments Statute.
• Grants immediate permanent residency - no need to first hold an M visa.
• R Visa must be renewed every 5 years.
• Expires if absent from Colombia for more than 2 consecutive years.
• Official total visa cost is USD 425 (includes ~USD 50 study fee) per the Cancilleria Resident Investor's Visa page; real-estate route requires min USD 200,000 while non-real-estate direct investment requires min USD 100,000.

Visitor Visa - Working Holiday (V-Working Holiday)

Visa for young foreigners from countries with reciprocal working holiday agreements who wish to travel and work temporarily in Colombia.

• Available only to nationals of countries with bilateral working holiday agreements with Colombia.
• Age restrictions typically apply (18-30 years).
• Allows temporary employment to fund travel.

Visitor Visa - Medical Treatment (V-Medical)

Visa for foreigners entering Colombia to receive medical treatment, healthcare consultations, or medical procedures.

Required documentation includes proof of medical appointment/treatment in Colombia. Visa-exempt nationalities may enter for medical purposes without a visa for stays under 90 days.

Migrant Visa - CAN/Andean Migrant (M-Andean)

Visa for nationals of Andean Community (CAN) member states (Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru) seeking to reside long-term in Colombia under the Andean Migratory Statute.

Facilitated pathway for CAN nationals under Decision 545 of the Andean Community on Free Mobility and Residence. Provides simplified documentation requirements and path to residency.

Migrant Visa - MERCOSUR Migrant (M-MERCOSUR)

Visa for nationals of MERCOSUR member and associate states seeking to reside long-term in Colombia.

Facilitated pathway for nationals of Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile under MERCOSUR free movement agreements. Colombia is a MERCOSUR associated state.

Migrant Visa - Income Recipient/Rentista (M-Rentista)

Visa for foreigners with a stable periodic income from foreign sources (rental income, dividends, royalties, etc.) who wish to reside in Colombia.

• For foreigners with passive income from creditable sources (different from retirement pensions which have M-Pensionado).
• Income must be provably periodic.
• After 5 continuous years, may qualify for R (Resident) visa.

Migrant Visa - Refugee (M-Refugee)

Visa for foreigners who have been granted refugee status by Colombia.

Issued after formal recognition of refugee status by Colombian authorities per Law 1997 of 2019 and international refugee conventions. Fee may be waived for humanitarian cases.

Resident Visa - Accumulated Residency (R-Accumulated)

Permanent residency visa for foreigners who have held a Colombian temporary/migrant visa and lived in Colombia continuously for the required number of years.

• Part of R (Resident) category under Resolución 5477 de 2022.
• Residency accumulation periods vary by M-visa type: 2 years (CAN/MERCOSUR), 3 years (marriage, investment), 5 years (retirement, rentista, expertise).
• Application must be made at least 30 calendar days before visa expiration.
• R Visa renewed every 5 years.
• Expires if absent from Colombia more than 2 consecutive years.

Visitor Visa - Courtesy Visa (V-Courtesy)

Visa granted to foreign officials, government representatives, and special categories as a diplomatic courtesy.

Granted at the discretion of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to accredited foreign officials and special diplomatic categories. Fee typically waived.

Visitor Visa - Internship (V-Internship)

Visa for foreigners undertaking professional training or internship positions in Colombian organizations.

For formal internship and professional training programs. Must have a sponsoring organization in Colombia.

Visitor Visa - Social Cooperation/Volunteering (V-Volunteer)

Visa for foreigners participating in development, human rights, or humanitarian projects in Colombia on a volunteer basis.

Requires sponsorship by a registered Colombian NGO or international organization. No salary may be received from Colombian sources.

Migrant Visa - Internationalization Promotion (M-Internationalization)

• Created to attract highly skilled foreigners in priority sectors.
• Holder must have at least a master's degree.
• After 3 continuous years, may qualify for R (Resident) visa.

Visitor Visa - Events (V-Eventos)

Short-stay entry to attend or take part in business, cultural, academic, sporting, or artistic events, conventions, and congresses in Colombia.

• For attendees, speakers, performers, or athletes at conventions and business/cultural/academic events.
• Any work permit is limited to the specific event.
• Visa-exempt nationalities may attend short events without a visa.

Visitor Visa - Crew Member (V-Tripulante)

Visa for foreign crew of vessels or aircraft working in Colombian jurisdictional waters or airspace.

Grants a work permit limited to the crew activity. Crew of fishing vessels in the San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina archipelago are fee-exempt per the official cost schedule.

Covers two official subcategories: short-term journalistic coverage ('Cubrimiento periodistico') and permanent foreign press correspondent ('Corresponsal permanente'). Work permit limited to the accredited journalistic activity.

Visitor Visa - Service Provider (V-Prestador de Servicios)

Visa for foreigners temporarily providing services in Colombia under a service or works-and-labour contract with a Colombian entity.

Work permit limited to the contracted service. Distinct from the M-Worker visa (fixed-term or indefinite employment contract) and the V-Technical Assistance visa.

Resident Visa - Former Colombian National / Renunciation (R-Renuncia)

Residency visa for foreigners who were formerly Colombian nationals by birth or adoption and who renounced Colombian nationality.

• Grants permanent residency and an open work permit.
• R Visa is renewed every 5 years; expires if the holder is absent from Colombia for more than 2 continuous years.

Beneficiary Visa (Visa de Beneficiario)

Dependent visa issued to the economically dependent immediate family of a principal V, M, or R visa holder.

• Official standalone category on the Cancilleria visa catalogue ('Visa de beneficiario') under Resolucion 5477 de 2022.
• Beneficiaries are the spouse or permanent partner, children, and dependent parents of the principal visa holder.
• Validity mirrors the principal's visa; work authorization depends on the principal visa type (R and some M principals grant open work permits to beneficiaries).
