Student e-Visa / Residence Permit

For foreign nationals admitted to a Ghanaian educational institution who need to reside in Ghana throughout the duration of their studies.

Requires letter from educational institution, admission letter, school fees payment receipts, two passport-sized photos, and passport. Resident fee range GH¢129–259 (approx USD 12–24 at GH¢11=$1 rate per GIS fees page). Duration matches length of study. Application lodged with Ghana Immigration Service.

Emergency Entry Visa (EEV) / Visa on Arrival

Granted at an immigration officer's discretion to persons who arrive at a Ghanaian port of entry without a pre-obtained visa, subject to conditions prescribed in regulations.

Fee: $200 per GIS fees and charges page (effective May 15, 2025). Requires letter to the Comptroller-General stating country of origin, arrival date, stay duration, visit purpose, travel itinerary, and lodging information. Not guaranteed - granted at immigration officer discretion. For business visits: also requires certificate of incorporation, tax clearance, and host's passport biodata.

Re-Entry Visa (Single)

Issued to visitors who are already in Ghana on a valid permit and wish to leave the country temporarily and return without obtaining a new visa.

Fee: $65–$100 (single) per GIS fees page. Requires completed Re-Entry Form, application letter, two passport-sized photographs, non-citizen identification card, and valid passport. Must already hold a valid Ghana residence status.

Re-Entry Visa (Multiple)

Multiple-entry re-entry permit for visitors in Ghana on a valid permit who need to make repeated temporary departures and returns.

Fee: $129–$194 (multiple) per GIS fees page. Same requirements as single re-entry visa. Must already hold a valid Ghana residence status.

Work and Residence Permit (Companies)

For foreign nationals who are lawfully admitted to Ghana and wish to work and reside in the country under employment by a registered company.

Fee: $194–$1,293 per GIS fees page (range by company type/quota). Requires letter to Comptroller-General, GIPC registration, tax clearance, audited accounts, medical report from Ghana Immigration Clinic, police report from home country, employment contract, professional/educational certificates, CV, and passport biodata. Application submitted to Ghana Immigration Service.

Work and Residence Permit (Missionaries/NGOs/GIPC/Free Zones)

For foreign nationals working with NGOs, missions, or businesses registered with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) or Ghana Free Zones Board.

Fee: $194–$388 (Missionaries/NGOs); $194–$500 (GIPC Automatic Quota); $194–$647 (Immigrant Quota) per GIS fees page. Requires GIPC Registration Certificate, Ghana Free Zones Board approval (if applicable), ministerial support letter, and standard company/professional documents.

Work and Residence Permit - Shareholders

For foreign nationals who hold shares in Ghanaian-registered companies and wish to reside in Ghana in connection with their business interests.

Fee: GH¢2,000 (approx USD 182 at GH¢11=$1) per GIS fees page. Requires share certificate, company incorporation documents, GIPC registration, and standard GIS documentation.

Residence Permit (Dependent)

For dependants of expatriates working in Ghana and for Ghanaian nationals with foreign passports seeking to reside with their Ghanaian-citizen family members.

Indefinite Residence Status

For foreign nationals wishing to reside permanently in Ghana, granting the right to live indefinitely, enter without a visa, and work without a work permit.

Requires attestation by two Ghanaians of repute, evidence of immovable properties (where applicable), 6 years tax clearance, 3 years audited accounts, SSNIT returns, police report from Ghana, and medical report. Also available for foreign spouses of Ghanaian nationals. No minimum investment amount stated on GIS page. Right of Abode

Granted to Ghanaians who lost citizenship by acquiring foreign nationality and to persons of African descent in the diaspora, conferring the right to reside and work permanently in Ghana.

Fee: GH¢1,940–3,879 (approx USD 176–353) per GIS fees page. Approved by the Minister with the President's approval. For Africans in the Diaspora: requires evidence of economic contribution to Ghana (shares, bank statements, audited accounts, employment records for Ghanaians). Concessionary Visa

A reduced-fee or special-arrangement visa for eligible diplomatic, official, or service passport holders from specific bilateral partner countries.

Fee: $97–$100 per GIS fees and charges page. Specific eligibility criteria and issuing conditions are managed through bilateral agreements. Apply through Ghana Immigration Service or Ghanaian embassy/consulate.

Rotators Permit

For foreign workers who rotate in and out of Ghana on a scheduled basis, typically in extractive industries such as oil, gas, or mining.

Fee: $647 for up to 6 months; $1,000 for 6–12 months per GIS fees page. Designed for workers in rotation schedules. Requires employer sponsorship and standard GIS documentation.

Free Zone Resident Permit

For foreign nationals employed by businesses operating within Ghana's designated Free Zone enclaves under the Ghana Free Zones Board.

Visa/Permit Extension (Extension of Visitor's Permit)

Extensions granted for a minimum of 3 months initially, up to a maximum of 6 months.
