Diplomatic / Official / Service Visa

Issued to diplomatic, official, and service passport holders traveling to South Sudan on official duty. Issued gratis (no fee).

Complimentary (gratis) visa for holders of diplomatic, official, service, or special passports of any nationality traveling on official duty. Available on arrival. Must present an official Note Verbale from the appropriate authorities. Multiple-entry visas are only granted to diplomatic and official passport holders. Single Entry Visa (Embassy/Consulate)

A standard single-entry visa issued by South Sudanese embassies or consulates abroad for business or tourism, when the online e-visa portal is unavailable or suspended.

Issued in person at South Sudanese embassies and consulates when the e-visa service is temporarily suspended or unavailable. The Embassy of South Sudan in Washington D.C. states the online portal may be temporarily suspended. Fee varies by nationality: USD 50 for bordering African countries, USD 100 for most nationalities, USD 160 for US passport holders, free for EAC/Egyptian nationals and diplomatic passport holders. Requires passport valid for at least 180 days, invitation letter from a South Sudanese organization, passport photos, money order or certified check. Processing time is approximately 10 business days.

Work Permit (Alien Employment)

Legal authorization for a foreign national to take up employment in South Sudan; applied for by the employer after the worker has entered on an entry/e-visa.

Issued by the National Ministry of Labour, Department of Alien Employment. Valid for one year from the date of issuance and renewable. A USD 100 application-form fee applies, plus a separate work-permit fee whose amount is not published on the official page. Required documents include a valid passport, entry visa, employment contract, CV, academic certificates, and CID/Interpol clearance certificates. A foreign national must first hold an entry (e-)visa; the work permit is a separate labour document, not an entry visa. Applied online at the Ministry of Labour portal workpermit.eservices.gov.ss. Special Residence Permit

Long-term residence for aliens who have resided continuously in South Sudan for at least 3 years, or lawfully for more than 5 years while carrying out scientific, technical or commercial activities deemed of value to South Sudan.

Defined in the Passports and Immigration Act 2011, Chapter V, section 19. Valid and renewable for five-year periods. Granted by the Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Immigration (Ministry of Interior). A residence permit extends to the holder's spouse(s), children and dependents (section 23). The holder forfeits the permit after continuous absence exceeding six months unless a return visa was obtained before departure (section 21). Fee not published on official sources. Ordinary Residence Permit

Residence for aliens who have resided continuously in South Sudan for at least 5 years, or lawfully for more than 2 years while carrying out scientific, technical or commercial activities deemed of value to South Sudan.

Defined in the Passports and Immigration Act 2011, Chapter V, section 20. Valid and renewable for two-year periods. Granted by the Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Immigration (Ministry of Interior). A residence permit extends to the holder's spouse(s), children and dependents (section 23). Temporary Residence Permit

Residence for aliens who are not eligible for a special or ordinary residence permit but need to reside in South Sudan (e.g. expatriate workers and their families in the early years of stay).

Defined in the Passports and Immigration Act 2011, Chapter V, section 20(3)-(4). Valid and renewable for periods not exceeding twelve months. Granted by the Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Immigration (Ministry of Interior). A residence permit extends to the holder's spouse(s), children and dependents (section 23). Tourists staying not more than three months are exempt from residence-permit/alien-registration requirements (section 24). Fee not published on official sources.
