Allows non-visa-exempt nationals to visit Norway for tourism, visiting family/friends, or other short stays. Norway is a Schengen member state, so this is a standard Schengen C visa.

Norway processes Schengen visas through Norwegian embassies and consulates abroad. Fee is the standard Schengen short-stay fee (โ‚ฌ90 / approx. USD 97), raised from โ‚ฌ80 to โ‚ฌ90 on 11 June 2024; children aged 6-11 pay โ‚ฌ45. Must apply at Norwegian embassy/consulate or VFS Global service centres. Applicants must have valid travel insurance for minimum โ‚ฌ30,000 cover. Must show proof of accommodation, sufficient funds, and intent to leave before visa expiry. 90 days is within any 180-day period. Citizens of visa-exempt countries do not need this visa.

Required for certain nationals changing planes at a Norwegian airport (e.g. Oslo Gardermoen) when travelling from one non-Schengen country to another non-Schengen country, without entering the Schengen area.

Only nationals of specified countries need an Airport Transit Visa (Type A); most transit passengers who remain airside do not need a visa. UDI instructs applicants to submit the application through the visa portal as a Schengen Type C application with an attached explanation letter stating it is for a Type A airport transit visa. Fee is the standard Schengen short-stay fee (โ‚ฌ90 / approx. USD 97). Does not permit leaving the international transit zone or entering Norway.

Engagements of up to 14 days do not require a permit (only notification to the police). For longer engagements a permit is granted for a maximum of one year at a time. After a permit, the holder must generally stay outside Norway for three months before a new permit can be granted.

Funding may come from a foreign employer, a grant (from Norway or abroad) or own funds; requires at least NOK 15,488 per month (NOK 170,368 per year). The permit also allows part-time work of up to 20 hours per week (including remote work) plus full-time during holidays. Time on this permit does NOT count toward permanent residence. UDI lists case processing as up to about 4 months (as of 2026). Researchers who are employed by a Norwegian institution instead apply under the skilled worker route.
