Type C - Pilgrimage Visa

For Muslim tourists visiting holy and religious sites in Iran, primarily Mashhad (Imam Reza shrine) and Shiraz (Shah Cheragh).

Restricted to Muslim travelers. Applicant typically requires documentation from an approved Islamic travel organization. Apply at Iranian consulate or embassy.

Type D - Diplomatic/Service Visa

For official government representatives, diplomats, consular officers, and holders of diplomatic or service passports traveling on official duties.

Issued through diplomatic channels. Holders of diplomatic passports from most countries benefit from additional visa suppression agreements. Duration varies by bilateral agreement. Typically exempt from standard fees.

Type E - Education Visa

For foreign nationals undertaking academic study, research, or scholarly activities at recognized Iranian universities and educational institutions.

Requires acceptance letter from an approved Iranian university or research institute. Must be applied for at an Iranian embassy or consulate. Renewable annually. Students must register with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.

Type F - Temporary Work Visa

For skilled foreign workers, specialists, engineers, and technicians employed temporarily in Iran by Iranian or international companies.

Requires work permit (issued by Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs) and employment contract with an Iranian entity. Applied at Iranian embassy or consulate. Renewable. Foreign executives and technicians employed by overseas firms operating in Iran may also qualify.

Type H - Media Visa

For journalists, reporters, film crews, producers, cameramen, and other media professionals working in Iran.

Requires prior accreditation and approval from the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) or the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. Apply at Iranian embassy or consulate. Processing time may be lengthy due to ministry approval requirements.

Type I - Investment Visa / Residence Permit

For foreign nationals making qualifying investments in Iran, enabling residency through the 5-year renewable investor residence permit.

Minimum qualifying investment approximately USD 90,000 (reduced from EUR 250,000 in April 2022). Eligible investment forms: long-term bank deposits in Iranian banks, investment bonds and securities, housing/real estate. Administered by the Organization for Investment, Economic and Technical Assistance of Iran (OIETA). Provides 5-year renewable residency only - not a path to citizenship. Iran does not permit dual citizenship.

Type M - Marital/Family Visa

For foreign nationals married to Iranian citizens (particularly foreign men married to Iranian women) and their dependent children, for family unification.

Requires proof of legal marriage recognized under Iranian law and documentation of family relationship. Must apply at an Iranian embassy or consulate. Iranian law governing family reunification applies asymmetrically by gender. Renewable.

Type T - Medical Visa

For foreign nationals traveling to Iran to receive medical treatment at approved Iranian hospitals and healthcare facilities.

Requires prior authorization from an approved Iranian medical center. Applicant must submit documentation of the required treatment, including confirmation from the Iranian hospital or medical institution. Apply at Iranian embassy or consulate.
