Work Permit

Authorizes foreign nationals to engage in paid employment in Jamaica for a designated employer and period.

Administered by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. Application fee JMD 2,000 (non-refundable). Processing approximately 10 business days with complete documentation. Permit is non-transferable; new application required when changing employers. CARICOM-skilled nationals may use a CARICOM Certificate of Recognition instead (fee JMD 8,000 for certificate + JMD 2,000 application).

Marriage Exemption Certificate (Work)

Exempts foreign nationals married to Jamaican citizens from requiring a standard work permit, allowing them to work freely in Jamaica.

Application fee JMD 17,250. Valid for 3 years for male spouses; valid for the duration of the marriage for female spouses. Issued by Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

Extension of Stay (Student)

Allows foreign students enrolled at Jamaican educational institutions to extend their authorized stay beyond the initial visitor admission period.

Extension of stay fee is JMD 10,000. Processing takes 3 working days in Kingston (25 Constant Spring Road) or 7 working days in Montego Bay. Students may also qualify for Unconditional Landing if they have Jamaican descent or CARICOM CSME status.

Extension of Stay (Visitor/Family)

Permits visitors or family members staying in Jamaica to extend their authorized period of stay beyond the initial grant at the port of entry.

Extension of stay processing fee JMD 10,000. Overstay regularization (if stay exceeded without authorization) costs JMD 50,000. Extension beyond visa exemption period also costs JMD 50,000.

Permanent Residence – Retirement Category

Grants long-term residency status to retired foreign nationals wishing to settle permanently in Jamaica after residing there for over 3 years.

Application fee JMD 100,000. Requires 3+ years of residence in Jamaica, proof of pension or financial means, police certificates, medical clearance, references, and original documents. Processing typically 3–6 months. Holders may live and work in Jamaica without restrictions. After 5 years residency, citizenship by naturalization is possible.

Permanent Residence – Foreign Investor Category

Grants permanent residency to foreign nationals who make a significant investment in Jamaica, allowing them to live and work in Jamaica without restrictions.

Application fee JMD 100,000. No minimum investment amount is stated on currently accessible official PICA pages. Initial entry via investor visa (3-month entry, renewable annually for 3 years); residence visa issued after qualifying period. Work permit still required separately. Processing minimum 6 months. Path to citizenship after 5 years.

Permanent Residence – Employment Category

Grants permanent residency to foreign nationals who have been continuously employed in Jamaica for a minimum of 5 years.

Application fee JMD 100,000. Requires minimum 5 years of unbroken employment in Jamaica. Processing 3–6 months. Holders may live and work without restrictions. Path to citizenship naturalization after 5 years total residency.

Permanent Residence – Marriage Category

Allows foreign nationals married to Jamaican citizens to obtain permanent residency in Jamaica.

Application fee JMD 100,000. Requires marriage certificate, proof of spouse's Jamaican citizenship, and standard documentation. Processing 3–6 months. Holders live and work in Jamaica without restrictions.

Unconditional Landing

A stamp in a foreign passport granting the holder the right to reside and work in Jamaica without restrictions, available to those with Jamaican citizenship by birth, descent, naturalization, or CARICOM CSME skilled worker status.

Available to: Jamaican nationals by birth using non-Jamaican passports; persons born overseas with Jamaican parents or grandparents; persons who acquired Jamaican citizenship through naturalization or registration; CARICOM nationals holding a CSME skills certificate. First-time application fee JMD 10,000; renewal/passport transfer fee JMD 5,000. Stamp valid until passport expiry. Allows study and work without separate permits.

Diplomatic/Official Passport Visa Waiver

Exempts holders of diplomatic and official passports from visa requirements for Jamaica under bilateral agreements with specific countries.

Diplomatic and official passport holders from Cuba, Haiti, and UAE (among others) are exempt from Jamaica's visa requirements. UAE agreement announced September 23, 2019. Ordinary passport holders from these countries may still require visas.

Re-Entry Visa (Non-Commonwealth Residents)

Allows non-Commonwealth nationals who are permanent residents or long-term residents of Jamaica to re-enter the country after traveling abroad.

Fee is JMD 500–JMD 2,000 depending on circumstances. Applies specifically to non-Commonwealth nationals who hold permanent residence or long-term status in Jamaica.

Student Visa (Student Entry Visa)

Entry visa for foreign nationals from visa-required countries admitted to study at a Jamaican educational institution; grants entry to attend school. Distinct from the in-country Extension of Stay (Student).

Applied for at a Jamaican embassy/consulate using Visa Application Form J before travel; not available online or on arrival. Students with a confirmed acceptance letter are landed for one (1) year on each entry; those whose enrolment is still being processed initially receive a two-month landing, extendable to 12 months once the acceptance letter is provided. Requires a return ticket valid for one year and proof of adequate funds. Consular/administrative fee US$20 plus the nationality-based visa fee at the NY consulate. Students over 16 staying 6+ months must register with PICA.

Work Visa (Entry Visa for Employment)

Entry visa for foreign nationals from visa-required countries who have been approved to work in Jamaica; grants entry to take up employment. Distinct from the work permit itself.

The visa grants entry; a separate work permit (or work permit exemption) issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security authorizes the employment and must be approved first. Applied for at a Jamaican embassy/consulate using Visa Application Form J; requires the Ministry of Labour work-permit approval letter. Processing 7-10 business days. Consular/administrative fee US$20 plus the nationality-based visa fee at the NY consulate. No e-visa; not available on arrival.
