Residencia Temporal - Actividades Remuneradas (Remunerated Activities)

Allows foreign nationals to reside in Chile and engage in lawful paid employment under an employment contract, service contract, or formal job offer.

Standard grant is up to 2 years, extendable for two successive 2-year periods. Job-offer pathway grants initial 90 days then 1-year extension upon presenting employment contract within 45 days of entry. Application must be submitted from outside Chile via SERMIG digital portal. All foreign documents require apostille or legalization.

Residencia Temporal - Trabajadores de Temporada (Seasonal Workers)

Permits foreign nationals to reside in Chile for seasonal employment directly related to the employer's main line of business.

Permit valid for up to 5 years (extendable for 2 more years) but actual stay limited to no more than 6 months per calendar year. Requires employment contract signed before a Chilean notary. Applicants have 45 days after entry to present employment contract. Nationals of bilateral-agreement countries may apply with a formal job offer instead.

Residencia Temporal - Estudiantes (Students)

Allows foreign nationals enrolled in state-recognized Chilean educational institutions to reside in Chile for the duration of their studies.

Holders may engage in lawful paid activities for up to 30 hours per week without additional authorization. Requires proof of enrollment and financial means. Extension requires proof of continued enrollment and financial capacity. Application must be made from outside Chile via SERMIG digital portal.

Residencia Temporal - Inversores y Personal Relacionado (Investors and Related Personnel)

Allows foreign investors making a minimum USD 500,000 investment in productive goods or services in Chile, and their key personnel, to reside in Chile.

Minimum investment of USD 500,000 or equivalent. Residential real estate for personal use does not qualify. Eligible applicants include legal representatives, executives, and specialized technical/management personnel of qualifying foreign companies. Requires sponsorship letter from INVESTCHILE per Interior Ministry Supreme Decree No. 177 of 2022 (Arts. 62-64). Must apply from outside Chile. Eligible family members may apply as dependents.

Residencia Temporal - Rentistas y Pensionados (Retired Persons and Income Earners)

Allows foreign nationals with sufficient regular passive income (pensions, rental income, dividends) to reside in Chile without engaging in employment.

Official SERMIG page states income sufficiency is assessed 'according to the parameters estimated by the Ministry of Social Development and Family' rather than a fixed published figure; third-party sources cite approximately USD 1,500-2,000/month but this exact amount is not published officially. Retirees submit a recent pension receipt; leasers (rentistas) submit lease contracts or asset-ownership certificates with income verification. Valid for up to 2 years, renewable. Path to permanent residency (Residencia Definitiva) after 24 months.

Residencia Temporal - Reunificación Familiar (Family Reunification)

Allows foreign nationals with qualifying family bonds to Chilean citizens or permanent residents to reside in Chile.

Eligible relationships: spouses/civil union partners, parents, children under 18, children with disabilities (any age), unmarried students under 24, and minors under guardianship. Applications processed via SERMIG's Portal de Trámites Digitales with separate processes for applicants inside vs. outside Chile.

Residencia Temporal - Tratamiento Médico (Medical Treatment)

Permits foreign nationals requiring medical treatment at Chilean health providers registered with the Superintendencia de Salud to reside in Chile for the duration of treatment.

Requires medical certificate detailing condition, treatment type, duration, and costs. Proof of economic means for subsistence and treatment financing required (health insurance acceptable). Extensions available with proof of ongoing treatment. Dependents may qualify. Must apply from outside Chile via SERMIG digital portal.

Working Holiday - Australia

Bilateral working holiday agreement allowing young Australian nationals to live and work temporarily in Chile.

Age limit: up to 31 years. Based on bilateral Working Holiday Agreement between Chile and Australia. Australia was also removed from DS 359 visa-required list effective Sep 2025, so Australians may now also enter visa-free as tourists for up to 90 days separately.

Working Holiday - New Zealand

Bilateral working holiday agreement allowing young New Zealand nationals to live and work temporarily in Chile.

Age limit: up to 30 years. Based on bilateral Working Holiday Agreement between Chile and New Zealand.

Residencia Temporal - Acuerdos Internacionales / Mercosur (International Reciprocity)

Temporary residence based on bilateral or multilateral international treaties, including the Mercosur Residence Agreement for nationals of member and associate states.

Covers nationals of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay under the Mercosur Residence Agreement (signed 6 Dec 2002, in force 28 Jul 2009). Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru ratified as of January 2024. Bolivia-Chile bilateral agreement eliminates application fees for Bolivian nationals. Holders may engage in lawful remunerated activities. Valid up to 2 years.

Residencia Temporal - Personas Religiosas (Religious Persons)

Allows members of recognized faiths and denominations to reside in Chile for religious activities.

Valid for up to 2 years, renewable. Applicant must belong to a religious entity legally constituted in Chile under Law N°19.638. Requires an approval report from the National Office of Religious Affairs and a legal-personality certificate. Apply from outside Chile via SERMIG digital portal. Residencia Temporal - Razones Humanitarias (Humanitarian Reasons)

Grants temporary residence to foreign nationals who are victims of violence or in vulnerable situations, including human trafficking victims, domestic violence victims, pregnant individuals, and children.

Five subcategories: children and adolescents, pregnant individuals, human trafficking victims, smuggling of migrant persons victims, and victims of domestic or gender-based violence. Duration and specific requirements vary by subcategory.

Residencia Temporal - Gestión de Negocios (Multi-Entry Business Management)

For foreign business executives and managers who must regularly enter Chile to handle management or executive duties for companies and investments operating in the country.

Distinct from the investor subcategory; covers executives conducting commercial operations that require regular multi-entry presence. Presence in Chile may not exceed six months per calendar year (Art. 72 of Ley N°21.325); permit term set by supreme decree. Requires an employer letter specifying role and income (apostilled/legalized) plus documentation of business interests. Apply from outside Chile via SERMIG digital portal.

Residencia Temporal - Personas Amparadas por Acuerdos Internacionales (Persons Covered by International Agreements)

Temporary residence for foreign nationals covered by a bilateral or multilateral treaty in force with Chile, including Working Holiday participants and Free Trade Agreement business persons.

Umbrella subcategory distinct from the Mercosur international-reciprocity route. Covers Working Holiday agreements (~20 partner countries incl. Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand) and the temporary-entry-for-business-persons chapters of Free Trade Agreements (Australia, Brazil, Canada, Central America, Colombia, South Korea, USA, Japan, Mexico, Peru, CPTPP). Residencia Temporal - Ex Titulares de Residencia Definitiva (Former Holders of Permanent Residency)

Allows foreign nationals whose Residencia Definitiva (or former Permanencia Definitiva) was revoked to regain temporary residence status.

For those whose permanent residency was tacitly revoked under Art. 43 of Decreto Ley N°1.094 (1975) or Art. 83 of Ley N°21.325 (e.g. prolonged absence from Chile). Requires passport valid at least 1 year, criminal-record certificate, and proof of sufficient economic means. Family members may apply as dependents (Art. 74). Residencia Temporal - Personas bajo Custodia de Gendarmería de Chile (Persons under Custody of Gendarmería)

Regularizes the residence status of foreign nationals under the authority and control of Chile's prison service.

Covers foreigners serving a custodial sentence (including prison furlough), under pretrial detention, on probation, or serving alternative sentences under Law N°18.216. Applications for detained/sentenced persons are filed by Gendarmería de Chile; those on parole or alternative sentences apply via SERMIG's portal with prison-official guidance. Residencia Temporal - Extranjeros por Orden de Tribunales de Justicia (Persons Required by Order of Courts)

Permits a foreign national to remain in Chile when a Chilean court orders their presence for the proper development of judicial proceedings in which they are a party.

Granted for as long as the court deems necessary for the judicial process (e.g. under a travel ban or transfer order). The application is filed by the court official issuing the order through SERMIG's digital platform, accompanied by a court certificate of proceedings. Permiso de Permanencia Transitoria - Residentes Oficiales que Terminan Misión (Official Residents Completing Mission)

Covers foreign diplomatic and official residents completing their official mission in Chile, allowing continued temporary stay.

Part of the Permanencia Transitoria framework. Approximately 73 bilateral agreements exempt diplomatic/official/service passport holders from requiring a visa for stays up to 90 days per the MINREL VIDO Manual (May 2025).

Residencia Definitiva (Permanent Residency)

Grants the right to reside indefinitely in Chile and engage in any lawful activity without restrictions.

Standard eligibility: minimum 24 months of Residencia Temporal. Reduced to 12 months for those with family ties to Chilean nationals/permanent residents, prior official missions, sufficient income/pensions, active business investments, or international agreement qualifications. ID card renewed every 5 years. Absence for more than 2 continuous years voids the permit. Path to citizenship by naturalization after 5 total years of legal residence.
