Policy noteIran has no US embassy or consulate, and the US has no diplomatic relations with Iran - Switzerland's protecting-power Foreign Interests Section in Tehran is currently closed, so there is no functioning channel for a US citizen to obtain an Iranian visa through normal means. Iran's official e-visa portal lists a Tourist (B) category, but explicitly notes some nationalities may be denied for political/diplomatic reasons and must apply in person via an embassy - not possible for US citizens given the above. travel.state.gov rates Iran Level 4 - Do Not Travel (terrorism, civil unrest, risk of arbitrary arrest and detention of US citizens).
