No — Uruguayan passport holders do not need a visa for Japan. Entry is visa-free for up to 90 days as of 2026.

Short-term stay visa exemption. IMPORTANT RESTRICTION (Note 11): New Uruguayan ordinary passports issued after April 16, 2025 that do not include a 'place of birth' on the personal data page are NOT recognized as valid by the Japanese government and are not eligible for visa-free travel. Uruguayan nationals holding old-version passports (issued before April 16, 2025, or new passports that still include 'place of birth') remain eligible for visa exemption.

How it worksJapan's online eVISA is based on your country of residence, not your nationality: you apply through the Japanese embassy/consulate (or its accredited visa centre) that covers where you live. A direct self-service eVISA is offered to residents of some jurisdictions (e.g. Australia, Canada, the UK, USA, Saudi Arabia); residents of others - including India, China, the Philippines and Vietnam - can only get the eVISA through a government-accredited travel agency, and most apply in person via VFS Global. Japan has no visa on arrival or ETA.
