Vietnamese passport holders need an approved eTA (electronic travel authorisation) before travelling to Italy, but not a full visa.

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will be required for visa-exempt third-country nationals once operational. The Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on 10 April 2026 across all Schengen countries, after a progressive rollout beginning 12 October 2025. ETIAS is scheduled to start operations in Q4 2026; no precise date confirmed as of June 2026. Applies to all Annex II nationals entering the Schengen area including Italy. A fee will apply; authorization covers multiple short stays within 3 years.

workLONG-TERM VISA TYPE (D) - SUBORDINATE EMPLOYMENT VISA

LONG STAY VISA (Type D). The request of any type of National Visa together with proper documentation must be submitted in person only at the Italy Visa Application Centre in Hanoi based on the territorial regions under the jurisdiction of the Italy embassy. All of documents must be translated in English or in Italian. If you apply in Hanoi, please kindly read carefully this guideline and to prepare the checklist (https://assets.ctfassets.net/xxg4p8gt3sg6/11x1eg5pq1frKGN7zOOgsn/49c598cb95928c2010c11b2675465b0a/Check-list-for-Subordinate-employment-_type-D_.pdf) as attached. Please note that the applicant have to submit their " NULLA OSTA (AUTHORATION) of the relevant SUI issued no later than 6 months" to the Embassy email: ambasciata.hanoi@esteri.it before they submit their documents in the Center. For applicants having the previous Schengen visa within the last 59 months, applicant is required to be present and to provide their finger prints at VFS. For minor applicant, it is mandatory to present at the VFS office at the moment of submission.

Travel insurance is mandatory for all Schengen countries. If you have not purchased, please click here (https://visa.vfsglobal.com/vnm/en/ita/travel-insurance) The below checklist is applicable for Italian Visa Application Centre in Ho Chi Minh City and Danang. All of documents must be translated in English or in Italian. (If you apply in Danang, All the translations in English or Italian of the Vietnamese documents shall be done by Justice Committee Division in Danang) The applicant must present the original and a true copy of each document at VFS for your visa application submission. All original documents must be notarized copies within the last 6 months from the time of submission. Notarization is required to be performed by an authorized third party rather than by the issuing authority of the document. To facilitate the submission process, please kindly arrange your papers into the following order - Checklist for Study Visa (Download here (https://assets.ctfassets.net/xxg4p8gt3sg6/1OosSqdR0TqaYzkgRA1Fw6/533a0cbf6d49468bc2565f54b7b2e6d5/Checklist-Study-visa.pdf)). The applicant needs to print out this checklist and sign to submit along with the visa application - Visa Application Form (Download here (https://assets.ctfassets.net/xxg4p8gt3sg6/4k5TGK1Vbp8WTJX5FqE7lF/d83190cfa94981ec2489b3d76f059879/application-form-new-update-hcm.pdf)) - 2 photos of the applicant must be taken within the last six (6) months (4x6cm or 3.5x4.5cm, white background) - Original passport valid for at least three months after visa expiry date, containing at least 2 blank pages - Copy of valid original passport (Photocopy all pages with visa stamps and immigration seals) - Previous passport (s) ( if any)( You can submit the original or the photocopy with visa stamps and immigration seals) - Flight Booking (s): This booking needs to be sent directly from the airline company with contacts and logo and provide all the necessary information of the flight(s). In case of traveling to more than 2 countries in Schengen, you will be required to submit your itinerary and proof of transportation for the ENTIRE period in Schengen area, such as flight booking, train or coach booking, etc… Name of applicant(s) need to be shown on all booking (s). - A copy of Travel Insurance, valid for all countries in the Schengen States, for the whole period of stay with minimum coverage is more than 30.000 Euro for each category (medical expenses and repatriation). - For duration of stay in Schengen States less than 5 days, you will be required to acquire travel insurance valid for a minimum period of 7 days. For example, you intend to stay in Schengen States from 20 January to 23 January 2015 (4 days), and then you need to buy a travel insurance validated from 20 January to 26 January 2015 (7 days). - For duration of stay in Schengen States from 6 days to more, you will be required to buy a travel insurance validated in the entire duration of stay plus to 2 extra days. For example, if you intend to stay in Schengen States from 20 January to 26 January 2015 (7 days), then you need to buy a travel insurance validated from 20 to 28 January 2015 (9 days). Note: If you buy travel insurance with coverage of 30,000 Euro, the insurance agency should confirm minimum coverage is more than 30,000 Euro; if they state that maximum coverage is 30,000 Euro, you need to require the insurance agency to correct it as above request; otherwise, you must upgrade your insurance with higher coverage than 30,000 Euro. - Copy of proof of accommodation during the ENTIRE stay in Schengen area - Hotel booking (s). Name of the applicant needs to be shown on the hotel booking (s). The date on flight booking and hotel booking must be logically matched. For example, if you intend to depart on 20 January 2015, and arrive in Italy on 21 January 2015, and you will leave Italy on 28 January 2015, in this case, your hotel booking in Italy must be checked in on 21 January 2015 and checked out on 28 January 2015. We will not accept a hotel booking with the check-in date and check-out date earlier or later than your departure and arrival, even if the difference is only one day. In case applicants book hotel(s) on airbnb.com, the hotel(s) where you reserved accommodation must have to send booking confirmation(s) directly to Consulate General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City via email address hochiminh.visti@esteri.it - In case of staying in a private accommodation in Italy or in any other Member State(s), a fulfilled “Proof of Sponsorship and/or private accommodation” form (Download here (https://assets.ctfassets.net/xxg4p8gt3sg6/63HjYdZ8de5uiAtFcHeSkQ/bea41cbbd511807e448d9597f4f1a543/lettera-di-invito-per-turismo-eu-gdpr-compliant.pdf)). The inviting person needs to send a scanned invitation which bears the inviter’s signature, accompanied with the photocopy of his/her passport/identity card and permesso di soggiorno (if the inviting does not hold Italian/European citizenship) to the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City via hochiminh.visti@esteri.it (mailto:hochiminh.visti@esteri.it) or fax +84 8 38275444. - The applicant will present a hard copy of the above-mentioned papers upon submission at VFS - Evidence of employment: - In case of employee: - A notarized copy of valid labor contract - Original pay slips of last 3 months - Original annual leave consent from your employer. - Note: Employee Confirmation Letter does not replace a labour contract. - Decision on sending staff to study in Italy in case of employer: - Business Registration/ Investment License. Noted: A notarized copy IN VIETNAMESE of Business Registration/ Investment License must be certified and legalized at Ho Chi Minh Department for Foreign Affairs (Address: 184bis Pasteur, District 1, HCMC). - A notarized copy of TAX/ Payment to State Budget (the last 3 months/ the last quarter). Attention: if the company pays tax at the bank, the copies of the receipts issued by the bank must be notarized by a public notary office. In case the copies cannot be notarized, the copies of the receipts need to be stamped on with the company’s seal, and applicants are requested to present the original receipts on the date of submission. In case company pays tax by online bank transfer, the electronic tax declaration sheets also need to be stamped on with the company’s seal. - In case of student: - A notarized copy of student card - Confirmation letter from your school - Letter of assignments if it is a scholarship by Education Institutions, Universities or recognized international organizations. Where the amount of the scholarship does not reach the amount established, need to be integrated up to the minimum of resource required by the Table A annexed to Ministry of Interior Directive 1.3.2000 - In the absence of scholarship prove of means of subsistence (traveler’s cheques or other documentation proving the availability of sources of income in Italy) for the entire period of staying for the amount established by the Table A annexed to Ministry of Interior Directive 1.3.2000 or by. - School’s Registration and acceptance - Proof of finance: - Last 3 months bank statement. (Original one with seal from the bank). The bank statement should be created maximum only 2 or 3 days before the date when you submit your application at VFS Centre. For example, if you intend to submit your visa application on 20 Jan 2015, you will be advised to submit your bank statement from 18 October 2014 until 18 or 20 Jan 2015. In case your monthly salary is transferred via banking, you will be required to submit the salary bank statement. Means of subsistence which a foreigner must prepare in order to enter Italy, according to the attached table (click here (https://assets.ctfassets.net/xxg4p8gt3sg6/4yt48K9I3yFpr1Qf2cWArs/419a97b80278e5ec65d0cbfd9b2d87bb/subsistence-table-for-duration-of-stay-eng.pdf)). - Notarized copy of bank saving book/ Bank Account Verification ( if any and only if opened one year before the submission date) - Notarized copy of vehicle registration ( if any) - Notarized copy of house/land registration documents, tenancy agreement/ mortgage statement (if any) - Notarized copy of shareholder ( if any) - Other documents: - For applicants holding NON-Vietnamese passport: A notarized copy of work permit or temporary residence permit is required. - A notarized copy of birth certificate */ marriage certificate **/ divorce certificate/ single certificate/ death certificate. (* Applicant under 18 years old is required to provide a birth certificate in Vietnamese version with notarized stamp and legalized stamp at Ho Chi Minh Department for Foreign Affairs-Address: 6 Alexandre De Rhodes, Dist 1, HCMC) - ** For marriages with a NON Vietnamese, a certified true copy of the original marriage certificate must be obtained and legalized at the HCMC Department of Foreign Affairs (Address: 184bis Pasteur, District 1, HCMC) - For children under 18 years old traveling with a single parent: an original consent letter and a notarized copy of ID card or passport of the other parent are required; birth certificate in Vietnamese version with notarized stamp and legalized stamp at Ho Chi Minh Department for Foreign Affairs-Address: 184bis Pasteur, District 1, HCMC and the authorization of the change of the surname ( if changed). For the consent letter, please contact the Consulate General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City via email hochiminh.consolato@esteri.it for your appointment to be issued it. Noted: The parental consent letter need to be submitted along with the visa application at VFS, hence we advise you should contact to the Consulate General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City for the parental consent letter 2 weeks before your appointment schedule at VFS. Important noted: - All applicants need to book an appointment with us on our website click here (https://visa.vfsglobal.com/vnm/en/ita/book-an-appointment) - All copies of documents in Vietnamese must be notarized/ certified and accurately translated into English/ Italian. The translations do not need to be certified by any translation services if you submit your application at VFS Ho Chi Minh. In case you submit your application at VFS Da Nang, the translations must be certified by translation services. - The required documents are applied for general case. VFS and the Consulate General of Italy in Ho Chi Minh City may require the applicant to provide more documents depend on the applicant’s personal situation. And the submission of the above documents does not guarantee the granting of a visa, but they are required in conformity with the Italy’s immigration regulations, and that the Consulate reserves itself the right to ask for supplementary documents if needed.

Please note that you need to purchase the insurance that covers the entire duration of your stay plus 2 additional days after returning to Vietnam. For example, if you plan to stay in the Schengen Area from January 20 to January 26,2024 (arriving in Vietnam on 27/01/2024), you need to buy the travel insurance valid from January 20th to January 29,2024.
