This is the standard employment route (distinct from the EDB-administered Occupation Permit). A foreign worker requires BOTH a Residence Permit from the Passport and Immigration Office AND a Work Permit from the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations, Employment and Training. Applications are made simultaneously by the employer through the e-Work Permit portal (workpermit.mu) using the Common Application Form for Work Permit / Certificate of Exemption. Residence Permit fee is RS 500 (approx. USD 11) per year per non-citizen worker, payable before issuance. Persons on tourist or business visas cannot switch to employment status.
