Ordinary Visa (Single Entry)

For tourism, visiting friends or relatives, attending meetings and workshops. Holders are not permitted to work or conduct business activities.

Applied via e-visa portal at visa.immigration.go.tz (advance application) OR obtainable on arrival at official entry points. Both options confirmed operational as of June 2026 per Tanzania Immigration Department and US State Dept (updated Oct 2025). USA nationals are required to apply for a Multiple Entry Visa instead of the Ordinary Visa. Only passports with M or F sex marker accepted for entry.

Multiple Entry Visa

For tourism, family visits, and certain professional categories requiring repeated entry over a 12-month period. Max 3 consecutive months per visit.

Eligible categories include: USA nationals (mandatory), company directors (requires BRELA registration documents), government consultants (requires ministry letter), NGO representatives, and family visitors (requires marriage/birth certificate). Valid for maximum 12 months with max 3 consecutive months (90 days) per stay.

Business Visa

For specific short-term professional assignments including machine repairs, training, feasibility studies, and other professional work not available locally.

Issued on a single entry basis only - cannot be used to re-enter Tanzania. Requires proof of work contract or assignment documentation. Not for general business/commerce purposes; those would use the Ordinary or Multiple Entry Visa.

Transit Visa

For passing through Tanzania en route to a third country.

Requires valid passport, onward/destination visa or ticket proving onward travel. Valid for up to 7 days.

Referral Visa

Entry visa for nationals of specified countries (and stateless persons/refugees holding Vienna Convention travel documents) whose applications require prior special clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration before a visa is issued.

Required for nationals of approximately 25 countries (e.g. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Chad, Eritrea, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Yemen) plus stateless persons and refugees. NOT eligible for visa on arrival - must apply online via the e-visa portal (visa.immigration.go.tz) at least 2 months before travel and should not book flights until approved. Requires a covering letter from a registered institution/company (official visits) or a host individual (personal visits), host's ID/permit, and a completed Security Bond form (T.I.F 12). Fee is the respective standard visa fee, which varies by nationality (e.g. Pakistan USD 200; USA and Ireland USD 100; most others USD 50) - no separate referral surcharge, hence fee_usd left null.
