Germany publishes a transit visa product for travellers passing through to another destination. Whether you need one depends on your nationality and whether you stay airside - see how transit visas work.

Airport Transit Visa (Type A)

Allows nationals of certain countries to transit through the international transit area of German airports (Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Berlin-Brandenburg) without entering the Schengen Area.

Required only for nationals of specific high-risk countries (approximately 20 nationalities including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, etc.). Transit visa holders remain in the international transit area and do not enter Schengen territory. Holders of valid Schengen, US, Canadian, Japanese visas or residence permits are exempt from this requirement. The five major German airports with international transit zones are Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Berlin-Brandenburg.
