Study Visa

Issued to foreign nationals pursuing academic/non-academic degrees, courses, or research at institutions in Nepal, on the recommendation of the Ministry of Education.

• A non-tourist visa issued by the Department of Immigration on the recommendation of the Ministry of Education, for a maximum of 1 year at a time (renewable for the length of study).
• Fee: USD 20 for stays up to 15 days, USD 40 per month beyond 15 days; teaching/research applicants and their dependents pay USD 50/month.
• Dependents' visas: children under 10 free, other dependents USD 15/month (for fee-waived students under university MoUs).
• A minimum bank balance of USD 3,000 per six months (plus USD 2,000 per dependent) is required for academic programs.

Working Visa

Required for foreign nationals to accept employment and work in Nepal for a company, industry, or organization.

• Officially the 'Working Visa' (a non-tourist visa).
• Only holders of a working visa may take up jobs in Nepal.
• Issued by the Department of Immigration on the basis of a recommendation from the concerned Ministry of the Government of Nepal, a Labour Permit from the Department of Labour, and a Work Agreement approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
• Validity is set to the period of the work/labour permit.
• Not available on arrival - foreigners typically enter on a tourist visa and convert after obtaining the labour permit.

Residential Visa (Investment Category)

Grants long-term residency in Nepal to foreign nationals who make a minimum qualifying investment in an industrial enterprise registered in Nepal.

• Minimum investment of USD 100,000 (or equivalent in convertible foreign currency) in a registered industrial enterprise in Nepal.
• Requires a recommendation letter from the Department of Industry.
• Annual fee: Nepalese currency equivalent to USD 700.
• Renewal fee: Nepalese currency equivalent to USD 1,200.
• Does not provide a direct path to permanent residence or citizenship.
• For non-investors wishing to reside in Nepal, proof of annual income of at least USD 20,000 is required instead.

Non-Residential Nepali (NRN) Visa

Grants foreign nationals of Nepali origin (holding non-SAARC citizenship) the right to visit and reside in Nepal under the Non-Resident Nepali scheme.

• Available to foreign nationals of Nepali origin holding citizenship of a non-SAARC country, provided they hold a valid NRN card issued by Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a Nepali diplomatic mission abroad.
• Issued gratis (free of charge) for 30 days on arrival.
• Extendable up to 1 year at the Department of Immigration at no charge while the NRN card remains valid.
• NRN card holders must maintain an active NRN visa during their stay - the card alone does not substitute for the visa.

Diplomatic / Official Visa

Issued to holders of diplomatic or official passports traveling to Nepal on official government business or diplomatic assignments.

• Issued for 30 days.
• Extendable through Nepal's Department of Consular Services in Kathmandu.
• Requires a diplomatic note (note verbale) from the relevant foreign ministry or diplomatic mission.
• Diplomatic/official/service passport holders from 14 countries (Thailand, Russia, China, Brazil, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mongolia, Jordan, Israel, Georgia, Qatar, Oman, Indonesia) are fully visa-exempt under bilateral agreements for 30–90 days depending on the agreement.

Marriage Visa

For foreign nationals married to a Nepali citizen (spouse of a Nepali passport holder).

• A non-tourist visa for the foreign spouse of a Nepali citizen.
• Issued for a maximum of 6 months on first application, extendable for up to 1 year at a time thereafter.
• Requires a Marriage Registration Certificate from the District Administration Office/District Court (or, if married abroad, the foreign certificate plus an embassy verification letter) and the Nepali spouse's citizenship certificate.
• The Nepali spouse must be physically present at every application and renewal (no proxy).
• Applied for at the Department of Immigration, Kathmandu after entering Nepal on a tourist visa.
• Does not itself authorize employment - a separate work permit is required to work.

Relationship (Relation) Visa

For foreign nationals who are blood relatives (within three generations) of a Nepali citizen.

• A non-tourist visa for foreign nationals who can establish a blood relationship (within three generations) with a Nepali citizen, evidenced by a Relationship Certificate issued by the concerned local government body.
• Issued for a minimum of one month and renewable.
• Applied for at the Department of Immigration (Non-Tourist Visa Section).
• Distinct from the Marriage Visa, which is specifically for the spouse of a Nepali citizen.

Press Visa

For foreign journalists and press representatives working in or reporting from Nepal.

• A non-tourist visa for accredited foreign journalists/press representatives.
• Issued for a maximum of 4 months at a time.
• Fee: USD 15 per month.
• Requires a recommendation letter from the Department of Information, an identity card issued by the Nepal Press Council, an online application form, and copies of the passport and current Nepalese visa.
• Obtained at the Department of Immigration.
